Nominations for the 2021 Board Elections are open until February 19. If you are actively interested or just curious about what service on NELA’s Board entails, please review the NELA Board Service Information Sheet. As you think about NELA colleagues who would be great Board members, don’t forget to think about yourself as well! Board members work hard for the organization, but also have a unique opportunity to do big picture strategizing while developing their own leadership, fundraising, and organizational skills.
Using the online 2021 Nominations Form, please submit your recommendations for Board candidates as soon as possible, but no later than Friday, February 19, 2021. In addition to stating your reasons for recommending the individual, please include the person’s name, address, telephone number, and email address as indicated on the form. As mentioned above, you may nominate yourself.
In forwarding names for consideration by the Nominating Committee, please keep in mind the general criteria that have been used in evaluating candidates for the Board. In addition to attendance at three annual Board meetings, Board members are routinely expected to devote a great deal of time and energy to a wide variety of NELA projects and activities, and to that of its related public education and advocacy organization, The Employee Rights Advocacy Institute For Law & Policy (The Institute). In particular, Board members are expected to serve as ambassadors for NELA and The Institute, actively engage in membership and Affiliate outreach, and support NELA’s and The Institute’s fundraising initiatives.
NELA’s Bylaws require that a candidate be a current regular NELA member in good standing and a member of NELA for at least two years. In the past, the Nominating Committee has considered an individual’s contributions to NELA, involvement in NELA activities, and other professional accomplishments. Diversity of practice and background are also considered. The Nominating Committee will seek to nominate the best qualified candidates whose primary focus of their professional lives is advancing the rights of employees and/or their interests.
The Board is composed of twenty-four members. NELA’s general membership will elect four individuals to the Board in April 2021, and the Board will appoint two members at its Summer meeting at the NELA Annual Convention in June 2021. The Nominating Committee will develop a slate of candidates for the election and appointment processes. Your help in identifying active NELA members who can make contributions to NELA’s growth and effectiveness while bringing new views and perspectives to our governing body will be greatly appreciated. Recruiting candidates from varied backgrounds, experiences, identities, and abilities is a top priority for NELA. Self-nominations are welcome.
