Steve Heikens is a private attorney in Minneapolis who uses retaliation to change Minnesota law. In 1986 he used a private right of action based on a vague Clean Indoor Air Act to establish the right of a non-smoker to be free of retaliation for complaining about smoke. The settlement caused the first large building in the Twin Cities to go smoke-free in 1987. In 2012, he represented Mitch Absey and achieved the first verdict in the U.S. for challenging a bully by asserting whistleblower for reporting violence and verbal abuse by a boss. Mr. Heikens was one of the early founders of PELA/NELA and has published two Books: The Balancing Act: Settlement vs. Trial (Beaver’s Pond Press 2000) and Strangely Familiar (2013), a novel about emotional WiFi.
