Honorable George Schiavelli (retired) served as a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California from January 2004 to September 2008. Currently, he serves as mediator and arbitrator for JAMS, the Resolution Experts. Prior to his appointment to the federal bench, Judge Schiavelli served as Of Counsel with the Appellate Group at Reed Smith in Los Angeles from 2000 to 2004. He is a former presiding judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court’s appellate division. He served on the Superior Court from 1994 to 2000. He was in private practice as a partner with Horvitz & Levy in Encino from 1986 to 1994; a partner with Ervin, Cohen & Jessup from 1976 to 1986; and with O’Melveny & Myers from 1974 to 1976. Judge Schiavelli has been active in professional organizations throughout his career. Most recently he has been a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Litigation Section Executive Committee, presided over Masters in Trial for the Los Angeles Chapter of ABOTA, and was a member of several Advisory Committees of the Judicial Council and a former Executive Committee member of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He was Deputy General Counsel of the Rampart Independent Review Panel in 2000. He has also been involved in the California Judges Association, Italian-American Lawyers Association (President in 1990), California State Bar, American Bar Association, Los Angeles County Bar Association, Beverly Hills Bar Association, and San Fernando Valley Bar Association. He is the co-author of California Civil Appellate Practice, Preserving the Record for Appeal (Cont. Ed. Of the Bar 3d ed.) Chapter 2A, "Technology in The Courtroom," which appeared in California Bar Journal, and the Judicial Perspective for the chapter on privilege in a CEB treatise on civil discovery. He earned his J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 1974. He was first in his class, was Order of the Coif, and in the Moot Court Honors Program. He is also the recipient of the Alumni Award for Academic Distinction. Judge Schiavelli assisted in founding a clinical program providing legal aid to UCLA students. He received his B.A. from Stanford University in 1970.
