The Honorable Morris B. Hoffman received his B.A. from the University of Colorado (1974, mathematics, with honors) and his J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law (1977) where he was managing editor of the Law Review (1976-77). He is currently a District Judge in the Second Judicial District, State of Colorado (1991-present). Judge Hoffman has served in all divisions, and is currently assigned to a criminal division. He has also presided over the Denver Statutory Grand Jury for nine of his twenty-two years on the bench. He is a member of the Panel on Consolidated Multidistrict Litigation (October 2000-present; Panel Chair, 2010-present), the Colorado Supreme Court’s Criminal Rules Committee (1997-present), the Colorado Bar Association’s Criminal Law Section Executive Council (1997-present; Chairman, 2007), the Judicial Advisory Board of The Sedona Conference (2009-present), and the National Judicial College’s National Mass Tort Directory (1996-present). Judge Hoffman is also an adjunct professor of law at the University of Colorado (2004-present), where he teaches three classes: 1) Jury History and Selection; 2) Law and the Biology of Human Nature; and 3) Law and Neuroscience. He is a member of The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s Research Network for Law and Neuroscience (2007-present), and a research fellow at the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research (2001-present). He has written many book chapters, essays in collections, and law review articles in journals including Stanford, University of Chicago, NYU, Vanderbilt, Duke, Northwestern, University of Pennsylvania, and the Journal of Philosophy, Science and Law, and law-related op-eds in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. He is writing a book titled “The Punisher’s Brain: An Evolutionary History of Judge and Jury,” to be published in 2013 by the Cambridge University Press.
