National Employment Lawyers Association Announces
Executive Director Departure

OAKLAND, CA — The National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) and its education and advocacy arm, The NELA Institute, today announced the upcoming departure of Executive Director Terry O’Neill. O’Neill will continue in her role through August 31.

“It has been a privilege to lead an organization representing thousands of the brightest minds in the legal field advocating for those who often do not have a voice,” O’Neill said. “I am confident that, with our board leadership and talented staff, the organization will continue to see much success.”

Wade B. Cowan, NELA president, noted that NELA and The NELA Institute achieved several major milestones during O’Neill’s tenure, including the most successful NELA Gala Fundraiser to date, as well as building consensus around an ambitious long-range joint strategic plan.

“We so appreciate Terry’s dedicated service to NELA,” said Cowan. “She has made important contributions to the organization that have set us on a positive and exciting path.”

Long-time staff member and Director of Operations Karen Maoki will serve as interim executive director of NELA and The NELA Institute, effective September 1, as a nationwide search is conducted for O’Neill’s replacement. The position is expected to be filled by the spring of 2020.

The National Employment Lawyers Association advances employee rights and serves lawyers who advocate for equality and justice in the American workplace. It is the country's largest professional organization exclusively composed of lawyers who represent individual employees in cases involving employment discrimination and other employment-related matters. NELA and its 69 circuit, state and local affiliates have more than 4,000 members around the country.
