The Honorable Carolyn N. Lerner was appointed U.S. Special Counsel by President Obama and was confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate in April 2011. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Lerner was a partner in the D.C. civil rights and employment law firm of Heller, Huron, Chertkof, Lerner, Simon & Salzman. She represented individuals in discrimination and employment matters, and also counseled nonprofits on a variety of matters, including best employment practices. Ms. Lerner has taught mediation as an adjunct professor at George Washington University School of Law. She was also a mediator for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Prior to becoming Special Counsel, Ms. Lerner served on various boards, including chairing the board of the Center for WorkLife Law, a non-profit which advocates for workers with family responsibilities, the WAGE Project, which works to end discrimination against women in the workplace, and the Council for Court Excellence. While an u ndergraduate at the University of Michigan, Ms. Lerner was the state’s Harry S. Truman Scholar. She earned her J.D. from New York University School of Law, where she was a Root-Tilden public interest scholar. After law school, she clerked for the Honorable Julian Abele Cook, Jr., Chief U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan.
