Judith Whiting is General Counsel at the Community Service Society of New York (CSS). She also directs the work of CSS’s Legal Department, helping to develop litigation and non-litigation approaches to ending discrimination against people with criminal conviction histories, with a particular emphasis on employment and housing. She also supervises the Legal Department’s Next Door Project, where specially-trained older adult volunteers work with staff to help New Yorkers obtain, understand and fix mistakes in their official criminal conviction histories. Before coming to CSS, Ms. Whiting was Senior Staff Attorney at the Legal Action Center, where she worked on anti-discrimination litigation and policy affecting people with criminal records, histories of substance use disorders and/or HIV/AIDS. She formerly served as Assistant Attorney General in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, and worked as staff attorney with the Criminal, Civil and Volunteer Divisions of The Legal Aid Society in New York. She is a graduate of Barnard College and Cornell Law School. Ms. Whiting serves on the New York City Bar Association’s Corrections Committee and Council on Criminal Justice, and in 2008 received the Association’s Legal Services Award.
