Eric M. Gutiérrez, NELA Legislative & Public Policy Director, directs the organization’s legislative and public policy initiatives and is its main lobbyist to Congress, the White House, and key federal agencies. Mr. Gutiérrez has a long history of commitment to human and civil rights and has worked on policy issues in the areas of employment discrimination, immigrants’ rights, education, voting, health care, financial literacy, housing, and access to public benefits. Prior to NELA, Mr. Gutiérrez was Staff Attorney at Columbia Legal Services in Moses Lake, Washington, where he primarily represented indigent farmworkers in employment discrimination cases. As Legislative Staff Attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in its Washington, DC National Public Policy Office, he served as the organization’s lead lobbyist on comprehensive immigration reform legislation. He also was the Immigrant Policy Program Director for Appleseed, a non-profit network of public interest justice centers in the United States and Mexico. In 2006, the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia (HBA-DC) named Mr. Gutiérrez a “Rising Star” of the next generation of legal leaders in the Hispanic community.
